Verdict
The Zeiss ZA Vario-Sonnar T* 16-35mm f/2.8 SSM produced convincing performance figures in our APS-C-based lab tests. The lens is extremely sharp at 16mm and 24mm although the quite high field curvature at 16mm could be better. The quality is somewhat lower at 35mm when using large aperture settings but stopping down resolves this problem. Lateral CAs, distortions as well as vignetting are well controlled and not overly field relevant anymore.
The mechanical quality of the lens is very high thanks to a tightly assembled combination of high quality plastic and metal parts. The SSM AF is both very fast and accurate and definitely a progress compared to the old screw-driven AF.
The Vario-Sonnar is a pricey lens and it is a bit questionable whether it makes sense on APS-C DSLRs. In this scope it competes with much cheaper but high quality lenses a la Zeiss ZA 16-80mm f/3.5-4.5 DT or the Tamron AF 17-50mm f/2.8 SP.

Pros:
* a tasteful, very solid barrel,
* brilliant frame centre picture quality,
* very good frame edge picture quality for the APS-C/DX sensor for the range of 16-24 mm,
* good frame edge picture quality for the full frame sensor at the range of 16-24 mm,
* low distortion on smaller matrix,
* low coma on smaller APS-C/DX matrix,
* astigmatism controlled well enough,
* good work against bright light,
* quick, noiseless and quite accurate autofocus,
* lens hood and a case included.
Cons:
* weaker frame edge performance at maximum aperture,
* high full frame chromatic aberration at 16 mm,
* very high coma in full frame corners,
* huge vignetting on full frame.
.......We can just state that the lens will rather meet the expectations of its potential buyers. It is perhaps not as good as the Nikkor 14-24 mm f/2.8 but its parameters are more universal and it is significantly smaller; also, it seems to be optically a tad better than the new Canon 16-35 mm f/2.8L.

Verdict
The Zeiss ZA Vario-Sonnar T* 16-35mm f/2.8 SSM didn't quite deliver as harmonious results as in the corresponding APS-C test but some aspects remain impressive. This is especially true for the resolution figures at 16mm which are easily among the best in this lens class. The lens struggles at large aperture settings at longer focal lengths but the peak performance (f/8-11) is very high. Lateral CAs are very well controlled. Barrel distortions can be disturbing at 16mm. The amount of vignetting is very high at 16mm/21mm @ f/2.8 but if you stop down it's not all that bad.

The Vario-Sonnar is an expensive lens and some may wonder whether it's really worth it - it's not a flawless lens after all but then no ultra-wide lens is. It's certainly capable of delivering great results if you're aware of its weaknesses and circle around them.
