San Marcos, Texas. 1940. Gelatin silver print. Library of congress, Washington, D.C
At a time when gas stations offered full service as a matter of course, they also were primary sources for tires, as Lee´s straightforward, documentary photograph attests. This particular station probably caught Lee´s eye because of the way its neatly arranged tires create a Lifesaver-like false front for the clapboard structure, even covering the second-story windows in the name of order. Lee also would have seen this gas station as a testament to American mobility and industriousness despite the overriding presence of an economic depression. When he took the picture he was working for the federal Farm Security Administration to record the proverty and social disruption then affecting rural communities. Along with the work of Walker Evans, Ben Shahn, and Marion Post Wolcott, Lee´s picture produced for the government constitute an unmatched archive of American life in the difficult period from 1936 to 1942.
